Marie was delighted to meet with His Excellency Professor Stephen Montefort, Malta’s High Commissioner to the UK recently, marking the decision by the Maltese Government to open a new Consulate in Scotland.

The meeting followed work by Marie over recent weeks to foster links between the Maltese authorities and the Scottish business community, aimed at driving forward new business and investment opportunities between the two countries.

Marie also met with Dr Edgar Brincat, Malta’s newly appointed Honorary Consul in Scotland, who will lead diplomatic engagement once the new Consulate opens in Glasgow next year.

The full-time consular presence will boost economic and cultural ties between Scotland and Malta, as well as acting as a hub for specific investment opportunities in the coming months and years.

Commenting, Marie said:

“I was delighted to meet with Professor Montefort and Dr Brincat, whom I warmly congratulate on his appointment as Malta’s Honorary Consul here in Scotland. 

The meeting was a great opportunity to discuss how we can grow the economic and cultural ties between our counties.   I have been working hard to help foster those links, and will continue to do so. Opening the consulate will make a huge difference to the potential for closer cooperation on investment opportunities which can benefit both Scotland and Malta. The areas for potential cooperation are huge, covering sectors such as education, sport, tourism, film, hospitality, energy, aviation and much else besides.

Having a dedicated diplomatic presence will also provide important support to the Maltese community here in Scotland. I’m also pleased that Malta has chosen to base its mission in Glasgow, which is a great win for the city and a vote of confidence in its importance economically.
